PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease) and PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) are related medical conditions that affect the ovaries in women. Its have some similarities but also have distinct differences:
- Definition:
PCOD: PCOD primarily refers to the presence of polycystic ovaries, which are ovaries with a high number of small cysts or follicles.
PCOS: PCOS is a syndrome characterized by a combination of symptoms, including irregular menstrual cycles, high levels of androgens (male hormones), and other metabolic and hormonal imbalances. Polycystic ovaries are just one of the possible features of PCOS.
- Diagnostic Criteria:
PCOD: Diagnosis of PCOD was traditionally based on ultrasound imaging showing polycystic ovaries.
PCOS: Diagnosis of PCOS is more comprehensive and typically requires the presence of at least two out of three criteria: irregular menstrual cycles, clinical or biochemical signs of androgen excess, and the exclusion of other possible conditions.
- Symptoms:
PCOD: PCOD may or may not be associated with symptoms such as irregular periods, ovarian pain, or infertility. It primarily focuses on the physical appearance of the ovaries.
PCOS: PCOS is associated with a range of symptoms, including irregular or absent periods, heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, acne, excessive hair growth, weight gain, insulin resistance, and conceive issues.
- Health Risks:
PCOD: While PCOD itself is mainly a structural issue related to the ovaries, it can be associated with some health risks such as irregular periods and miscarriage.
PCOS: PCOS is associated with a higher risk of various health issues, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and endometrial cancer due to hormonal and metabolic disturbances.
